In 1956, 40-year-old virgin, Olof (Lassgard), lives on his rather rundown farm in western Sweden—his only friend being the younger Erik (Widerberg), who takes advantage of Olof's generosity. Then Ellen (Bergstrom) turns up in answer to Olof's ad for a housekeeper and the unlikely duo become a romantic couple much to Erik's dismay.
