Mr. Wonderful
Mr. Wonderful ★★½ 1993 (PG-13)
Bittersweet (rather than purely romantic) look at love and romance. Divorced Con Ed worker Gus (Dillon) is hard up for cash and tries to marry off ex-wife Lee (Sciorra) so he can use her alimony to invest in a bowling alley with his buddies. Routine flick's saved by the cast, who manage to bring a small measure of believability to a transparent plot. This was director Minghella's sophomore effort, between “Truly, Madly, Deeply” and “The English Patient.” 99m/C VHS, DVD . James Gandolfini, Bruce Kirby, Jessica Harper, Bruce Altman, Paul Bates, Matt Dillon, Annabella Sciorra, William Hurt, Mary-Louise Parker, Luis Guzman, Dan Hedaya, Vincent D'Onofrio; D: Anthony Minghella; W: Amy Schor, Vicki Polon; C: Geoffrey Simpson; M: Michael Gore.
