The Judgement ★★ I Fak; Ai-Fak 2004

Slow-moving, Thai Buddhist story from first-time director Thongsang is likely to appeal to cinephiles only. Novice monk Fak (Yaowananon) returns to his isolated village to care for his ailing father, whom he discovers has married young and beautiful Somson (Kongmalai). The villagers all think she's crazy and Somson doesn't help matters by promptly flirting with Fak, whose vows include chastity. Far from being the comedy it first seems, the flick turns down a dark road after dad dies and the self-righteous villagers get increasingly suspicious over the relationship between the two in-laws. Thai with subtitles. 110m/C TH Bongkoj Khongmalai, Pitisak Yaowananon, Thedsak Yaemniyon; D: Pantham Thongsang; W: Somkiat Withuranich; C: Wisan Jiraaungkoonsakun; M: Hualampong Riddim.
