Adaptation of Goethe's 1809 novel, which the Taviani brothers transport to their native Tuscany. Aristocratic Charlotte (Huppert) and Edouard (Anglade) reunite after 20 years and decide to marry, retiring to a country villa. Their idyll is interrupted by the arrival of Edouard's best friend, Othon (Bentivoglio), and Charlotte's goddaughter Ottilie (Gillain). Soon, the married duo find themselves in love with their respective houseguests. But though the characters pursue their relationships, tragedy haunts them. French with subtitles. 98m/C VHS .
