The Devil and Daniel Johnston ★★★ 2005 (PG-13)

Having lived in relative cult obscurity in the 1980s, singer/songwriter Daniel Johnston morphed into a quasi-celebrity in the early 1990s after Nirvana's Kurt Cobain wore a T-shirt promoting him. Director Feuer-zeig's lively documentary follows Johnston from his teenage years—with material that Johnston captured himself on audio and videotape—to his rise to sort-of fame with some of his music being recorded by well- known acts such as Tom Waits and Pearl Jam. However, his life has been riddled with trouble caused by his manic depression. Tends to look mostly at the bright side of his talents and ignores those who contend that he is perhaps overrated. 110m/C DVD . USD: Jeff Feuerzeig; W: Jeff Feuerzeig; C: Fortunato Procopio; M: Daniel Johnston.
