Cinema Paradiso ★★★ Nuovo Cinema Paradiso 1988

Memoir of a boy's life working at a movie theatre in smalltown Italy after WWII. Film aspires to both majestic sweep and stirring poignancy, but only occasionally hits its target. Still manages to move the viewer, and it features a suitably lowkey performance by the masterful Noiret. Autobiographically inspired script written by Tornatore. The version shown in America is approximately a halfhour shorter than the original Italian form. 123m/C VHS, DVD . IT Philippe Noiret, Jacques Perrin, Salvatore Cascio, Marco Leonardi, Agnes Nano, Leopoldo Trieste; D: Giuseppe Tornatore; W: Giuseppe Tornatore; C: Blasco Giurato; M: Ennio Morricone. Oscars '89: Foreign Film; British Acad. '90: Actor (Noiret), Foreign Film, Orig. Screenplay, Support. Actor (Cascio); Cannes '89: Grand Jury Prize; Golden Globes '90: Foreign Film.
