Lermontova, Nadezhda Vladimirovna (1885–1921)
Russian painter who was influenced by Cubism. Born in St. Petersburg in 1885; died in 1921 in Petrograd (later Leningrad, now St. Petersburg).
Nadezhda Lermontova's premature death in the chaos of revolutionary Soviet Russia left a question that can never be answered: had she lived, would she have become a great painter? During her short life, Lermontova produced a number of impressive works, including what is probably her best-known painting, On the Sofa: Self-Portrait (1910s), a large (106.8 × 124.5) oil on canvas now displayed at the State Russian Museum. Born in St. Petersburg, she studied there at the Zvantseva School from 1907 to 1910. Starting in 1911, the painter participated in a number of exhibitions, including those of Soyuz Molodezhi (the Union of Youth) in 1912–13. With Petrov-Vodkin, she executed paintings in the church at Ovruch, Ukraine. Lermontova also designed sets for theater productions in St. Petersburg.
