Kabos, Ilona (1893–1973)

Hungarian musician who specialized in performing works for two pianos. Born in Budapest, Hungary, on December 7, 1893; died in London, on May 28, 1973; married Louis Kentner.

Ilona Kabos was born in Budapest in 1893 and studied in her native country. After teaching at the Royal Budapest Academy of Music from 1930 through 1936, she became a resident of London in the late 1930s. Kabos specialized in duo-piano music, often performing the works of Béla Bartok with her husband Louis Kentner. Settling in the United States in 1965, she taught for a number of years at the Juilliard School of Music in New York, where she was highly regarded. Her recordings, especially of Bartok, excited considerable critical interest.
