Accra
Accra Capital and largest city of Ghana, on the Gulf of Guinea. Occupied by the Ga people since the 15th century, it became the capital of Britain's Gold Coast colony in 1875. Today it is a major port and economic centre and the headquarters of the Defence Commission of the Organization of African Unity (OAU). Industries: engineering, timber, textiles, chemicals. The principal export is cacao. Pop. (2000) 1,356,514.
