coco
coco, cocoa 1 †nut of the coco-palm, Cocos nucifera, and the tree itself XVI; now only in coco(a)-, coker-nut XVII. — Sp., Pg. coco, orig. playful use of coco grinning face, grimace, with allusion to the monkey-like appearance of the base of the nut. Appears first in latinized form †cocus, later †cocos. The sp. cocoa is due to an error in Johnson's dictionary, in which this word and COCOA 2 were combined under one heading; coker dates from XVII.
