Independent, 4-year, coed, affiliated with Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Awards associate and bachelor's degrees. Founded 1878. Setting: 320-acre small town campus. Endowment: $1.4 million. Educational spending 2003-04: $7319 per student. Total enrollment: 274. Student-undergrad faculty ratio is 7:1. 198 applied, 71% were admitted. Full-time: 135 students, 70% women, 30% men. Part-time: 139 students, 65% women, 35% men. Collegiate Environment:
Orientation program. Choral group. Social organizations: 5 open to all. Most popular organizations: Fly Fishing Club, basketball, American Sign Language, American Fisheries Society, Student Ethnic Association. Major annual events: Fall Talent Show, Founders' Day, Spring Expo. Student services: personal-psychological counseling. Campus security: 24-hour patrols, controlled dormitory access. 180 college housing spaces available; 72 were occupied in 2003-04. No special consideration for freshman housing applicants. On-campus residence required through sophomore year. Options: coed, men-only, women-only housing available. Stratton Library with 46,000 books, 3 microform titles, 150 serials, an OPAC, and a Web page. Operations spending 2003-04: $104,181. 60 computers available on campus for general student use. A campuswide network can be accessed from student residence rooms and from off campus. Staffed computer lab on campus.
Community Environment:
Campus is located in Sitka on Baranof Island, Part of Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska. A mild marine climate keeps Sitka cool in summer and warm in the winter. Rainfall is slightly less than 100 inches per year. Sitka is Alaska's fifth largest city with a population of about 9,000 people. It supports a sizable business community including clothing stores, sporting goods, record stores, movie theater, convention center, museums, radio stations, local TV station, and a number of excellent restaurants. Access is by jet, plane, or ferry.
