Reichmann, Theodor

Reichmann, Theodor , noted German baritone; b. Rostock, March 15, 1849; d. Marbach, May 22, 1903. He studied in Berlin and Prague, and after further training with Lamperti in Milan, made his operatic debut in Magdeburg (1869). Following appearances in Rotterdam, Strasbourg, and Hamburg, he sang in 1874 in Munich, where he became a member of the Court Opera in 1875; also sang at the Bayreuth Festivals (1882–1902), where he was esteemed for his portrayal of Amfortas, which he created. In 1882 he made his London debut as Wotan; his Covent Garden debut followed as Telra-mund on June 11, 1884. He was a member of the Vienna Court Opera (1883–89). He made his Metropolitan Opera debut in N.Y. as the Dutchman on Nov. 27, 1889, and remained on its roster until 1893; then rejoined the Vienna Court Opera, singing there until his death. He gave his farewell performance in Munich as Hans Sachs on Aug. 11, 1902.
