Howarth, Judith

Howarth, Judith, English soprano; b. Ipswich, Sept. 11, 1962. She was trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow and at the National Opera School, and received vocal instruction from Patricia Macmahon. In 1984 she made her debut as a soloist with the English Chamber Orch. In 1985 she was awarded the Kathleen Ferrier Prize and made her first appearance at London’s Covent Garden as the First Maid in Zemlinsky’s Der Zwerg.Her U.S. debut followed in 1989 when she appeared in concert in Seattle. In 1991 she was engaged at the London Promenade Concerts, in Salzburg, and in Aix-en-Provence. She portrayed Morgana in Alcina at Covent Garden in 1992, and returned there as Gilda in 1993 and as Walton’s Cressida in 1995. In 1998 she sang Donizetti’s Marie in Geneva.
