Harwood, Basil

Harwood, Basil, English organist and composer; b. Woodhouse, Gloucestershire, April 11, 1859; d. London, April 3, 1949. He studied piano with J. L. Roeckel and organ with George Risely, then studied with Reinecke and Jadassohn at the Leipzig Cons. He also studied theology with Corfe at Trinity Coll., Oxford. He was organist at St. Barnabas Church, Pimlico (1883–87), Ely Cathedral (1887–92), and Christ Church, Oxford (1892–1909); also was the 1st conductor of Oxford’s Bach Choir (1896–1900). He ed. the Oxford Hymn Book (1908); wrote a number of sacred works for chorus, organ pieces (2 sonatas, Organ Concerto, Christmastide, Dithyramb, etc.), and a cantata, Ode on May Morning, after Milton (Leeds Festival, 1913).
