Frank, Alan (Clifford)

Frank, Alan (Clifford), English music scholar; b. London, Oct. 10, 1910; d. July 9, 1994. He studied the clarinet, conducting, and composition. At the age of 17, he joined the staff of the Oxford Univ. Press; during World War II, he was in the Royal Air Force. In 1947 he was appointed music ed. of the Oxford Univ. Press; in 1954 he became head of its music dept.; retired in 1975. In 1935 he married Phyllis Tate. He publ. The Playing of Chamber Music (with G. Stratton; London, 1935; 2nd ed., 1951) and Modern British Composers (London, 1953); he was also co-author (with F. Thurston) of A Comprehensive Tutor for the Boehm Clarinet (London, 1939).
