GRENADA. A country of the Caribbean, and member of the
COMMONWEALTH. Head of state: the British monarch, represented by a governor-general. Languages: English (official), English Creole, French Creole. Columbus visited the island in 1498, in the mid-17c French settlers from Martinique ousted the Carib Indians, and the island was ceded to Britain in 1783. It was administered as part of the Windward Islands in 1833, became a colony in 1877 and independent in 1974. See
