Grell, (August) Eduard

Grell, (August) Eduard, German organist, conductor, and composer; b. Berlin, Nov. 6, 1800; d. Steglitz, near Berlin, Aug. 10, 1886. He studied with his father (piano and organ), J.C. Kaufmann (piano), G. Ritschl (voice and theory), and Zelter and Rungenhagen (composition), and later in Erfurt with M. Fischer (organ). In 1817 he became organist of Berlin’s Nikolaikirche and a member of the Singakademie, where he later was asst. conductor (1832-53) and then conductor (1853-76). He also was organist at the Berlin Cathedral (1839-57). He composed 4 oratorios, a Te Deum, masses, cantatas, hymns, motets, etc. H. Bellermann ed. his essays as Aufsatze und Gutachten (Berlin, 1887).
