Van Dam, José [ Van Damme, Joseph] (b Brussels, 1940). Belg. bass. Opera début Liège 1960 (Don Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia). Sang minor roles at Paris Opéra and Opéra-Comique 1961–5. Geneva Opera 1965–7; Deutsche Oper, Berlin, from 1967. Salzburg Fest. début 1968. CG début 1973 as Escamillo, a role he has sung with much success in all leading opera houses, e.g. NY Met 1965. Created title-role in Messiaen's Saint François d'Assise, Paris 1983. Wide concert repertory.
