History / Histoire
The Library of Parliament was established at Confederation. It initially housed the collection of the legislative library of the British colony of Canada, which had been shipped to Ottawa from Quebec City in 1865. The collection of the Library of Parliament can thus be linked to the collections of the original legislative libraries of Upper Canada and Lower Canada, which were established in the late eighteenth century.
La Bibliothèque du Parlement a été créée au moment de la Confédération. Au départ, elle abritait la collection de la Bibliothèque législative de la Colonie britannique du Canada, transportée de Québec à Ottawa en 1865. Les collections de la Bibliothèque remontent donc à celles des bibliothèques législatives originales du Haut-Canada et du Bas-Canada, qui avaient été fondées à la fin du XVIIIe siècle.

The mission of the Library of Parliament is to provide information, research and analysis to Parliament on a nonpartisan and confidential basis through the excellence of its staff and information assets and, to the general public, information concerning the Parliament of Canada.
La mission de la Bibliothèque du Parlement consiste à fournir au Parlement des services d'information, de recherche et d'analyse non partisans et confidentiels, grâce à l'excellence de son personnel et de sa documentation et, au grand public, de l'information sur le Parlement du Canada.
Organization / Services
The Library of Parliament has two branches and two administrative services:
- Information and Documentation Branch
- Parliamentary Research Branch
- Financial Services
- Human Resources Services
La Bibliothèque du Parlement comprend deux directions et deux services administratifs:

Collection / Fonds
There are over 15 linear kilometers of documents in the Library of Parliament's collection. These include government publications, books, brochures, theses, periodicals and newspapers. The collection also includes microforms, electronic documents, CD-roms, databases, audio and videotapes.
La collection de la Bibliothèque compte plus de 15 kilomètres linéaires de documents dont les publications gouvernementales, les monographies, les brochures, les thèses, les périodiques et les journaux. Aussi, la collection comprend les microformes, les documents électroniques, les CD-roms, les bases de données, les cassettes audio et les vidéocassettes.
