Wiedewelt, Johannes
Wiedewelt, Johannes (1731–1802). Danish designer, sculptor, and writer, the first to practise Neo-Classicism based on a theoretical knowledge of Antiquity. Among his works may be mentioned the sarcophagus (1760–8) of King Christian VI (1730–46) in Roskilde Cathedral, decorations in the gardens of Fredensborg Palace (from 1760), the splendid monument (1769–77) of King Frederik V (1746–66) in Roskilde Cathedral (1769–77), and numerous memorials and monuments (e.g. Nielsen tomb (1798), Assistens Cemetery, and the Naval Monument, Holmens Cemetery (1802), both in Copenhagen). He designed the Memorial Grove at Jaegerspris (1779–89), and published several books, including a volume on Egyptian and Roman Antiquities (1786) and on his Thoughts on Taste in the Arts (1762).
