Torralva, Diogo de (c.1500–c.66). Portuguese architect, perhaps of Spanish extraction. The son-in-law of Arruda, he nevertheless moved away from the Manueline style to a more Italian Renaissance manner, as in the great cloister of the Ordem de Christo, Tomar, Santarém (1554–64), where influences from Bramante, Palladio, and Serlio are clearly displayed in the highly articulated treatment of the façades. He probably designed the sanctuary of the Jerónimos, Belém, near Lisbon (built 1571–2). Other works have been attributed to him.
