Basile, Andreana

Basile, Andreana, famous Italian contralto and instrumentalist, mother of Leonora Baroni; b. Posilipo, c. 1580; d. Rome, c. 1640. She attracted the public by her extraordinary beauty and became known as “la bella Adriana.” She often accompanied herself on the harp and guitar. In Naples she married Muzio Baroni, a Calabrian nobleman. In 1610 she was engaged by the court of Vincenzo Gonzaga, the Duke of Mantua, remaining a principal singer at his court until 1624. She was praised by Monteverdi for her musicianship. In 1633 she settled in Rome.
