-ado
-ado repr. Sp., Pg. -ado (:- L. -ātus -ATE2), m. pp. ending of vbs. in -ar, as in DESPERADO, TORNADO. This suffix was also freq. used irreg. in late-XVI and XVII adoptions of words in F. -ADE, Sp. -ada, It. -ata; e.g. bravado, crusado, palisado, some of which have survived as the regular form, while in others -ado has been superseded by -ADE.
