special educational needs
special educational needs (SEN) pl. n. the requirements of children who have difficulties in learning or in accessing education. Children with SEN can be supported via mainstream schools or may attend a special school. Children identified as having SEN that cannot be met by a mainstream school should be assessed by their local authority (see statementing).
