Hartog, Eduard de, Dutch pianist, pedagogue, and composer; b. Amsterdam, Aug. 15, 1829; d. The Hague, Nov. 8, 1909. He studied piano with Bertelman and Litolff and composition with Heinze in Amsterdam. Later he studied with Hoch and Dulcken in Germany, and with Dameke, K.A.F. Eckert, and Elwart in Paris, where he was active as a pianist and a pedagogue (1852–1900). He composed the operas Le Manage de Don Lope (Paris, 1865) and L’Amour et son Hôte (Brussels, 1873), 3 symphonic poems, a set of orch. sketches, chamber music, and piano pieces.
