Was a member of Italian Parliament (1983–99), becoming deputy speaker (1994) and agriculture minister (1994–95), and a member of Alleanza nazionale (AN) political executive (1994–99); elected mayor of Lecce (1998); representing Union for Europe of the Nations Group (UEN), elected to 5th European Parliament (1999–2004).
