magnesium (Mg) An element that is found in high concentrations in plants. It plays an important role in the chemical structure of chlorophyll and of membranes and is involved in many enzyme reactions, especially those catalysing the transfer of phosphate compounds. Deficiency can produce various symptoms, including chlorosis and the development of other pigments in leaves.
