SAINT VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES, commonly written St Vincent and the Grenadines. A Caribbean country and member of the COMMONWEALTH, including the islands of St Vincent, Balliceau, Bequia, Canouan, Isle D'Quatre, and Mustique. Languages: English (official), French Creole. Columbus visited the area in 1498. Europeans could only settle in St Vincent after making treaties with the local Caribs. The British and French competed for the island until 1763, when it became British by the Treaty of Paris. In 1773, the Caribs agreed to divide the island with the British, but grew resentful and with French help rebelled in 1795. Most were deported in 1796 to islands in the Gulf of Honduras. St Vincent became part of the Windward Island colony in 1871 and the group became independent in 1979. See CARIBBEAN ENGLISH.
