The saying is found earlier in Greek and Latin, as in the writings of the Greek poet Theocritus (c.310–250 bc), ‘there's hope among the living.’ It is reworked in a modern political quotation by the Labour politician Richard Crossman (1907–74), who is said to have commented on the death of the Labour leader Hugh Gaitskell in 1963, ‘While there is death there is hope.’
