Puerto Rico Self-governing island commonwealth (in union with the USA) in the West Indies; the most easterly island of the Greater Antilles; the capital is San Juan. First visited by Columbus in 1493, the island remained a Spanish colony until 1898, when it was ceded to the USA. In 1952, it was proclaimed a semi-autonomous commonwealth. The decline in the sugar industry in the 1940s created considerable unemployment. Many Puerto Ricans emigrated to the USA. The island is of volcanic origin, and much of the land is mountainous and unsuitable for agriculture. The principal crops are sugar, tobacco, coffee, pineapples and maize. Industries: tourism, textiles, electronic equipment, petrochemicals. Area: 8870sq km (3425sq mi). Pop. (2000) 3,808,610. See West Indies map
