Monroe, James
Monroe, James (1758–1831) Fifth US President (1817–25). Monroe fought in the American Revolution and was wounded at the Battle of
Trenton (December 1776). He was a personal friend of Thomas
Jefferson, and served him loyally in the Senate (1790–94). Monroe was governor of Virginia (1799–1802) before helping to negotiate the
Louisiana Purchase (1803). He was secretary of state (1811–16) under James
Madison before becoming president. Disputes over
slavery marred his first term and resulted in the
Missouri Compromise. His foreign policy successes included the
Rush-Bagot Convention (1817), and the acquisition of Florida. He is chiefly remembered for the
Monroe Doctrine.
