James Pickard

British inventor who in 1780 patented one of the first steam engines. Although others had developed variations on the steam engine, Pickard was the first to formalize this through the patenting process, in which he had to prove that the invention was new, useful, and practical. The steam engine was one of the primary forces ushering in and powering the Industrial Revolution.
