George III
George III (1738–1820) King of Great Britain and Ireland (1760–1820), and King of Hanover (1760–1820), grandson of
George II. He was the first thoroughly English monarch of his line. George shared the blame with Lord
North for the loss of the American colonies in the
American Revolution (1775–83), but was quick to appreciate the talents of William
Pitt (the Younger). His reign witnessed the beginnings of the
Industrial Revolution. In 1765, he suffered his first attack of apparent insanity, now known to be symptoms of
porphyria. The attacks grew worse and, in 1811, his son, the future
George IV, became Prince Regent.
