1908-1987

American electrical engineer whose efforts led to the development of radio and television broadcast antennas. In 1933 he received a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin and then joined the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) as a research engineer. During 1934-36 Brown developed broadcast antennas that could transmit electromagnetic waves in a certain direction, which led to the "turnstile" antenna. This latter device in turn became the industry standard for television and frequency-modulated (FM) radio broadcasting.
