Papua New Guinea is an independent monarchy within the Commonwealth with the queen as head of state. It is formed by the eastern half of the large island of New Guinea together with a number of adjacent islands to the east and north. The western part of the island was claimed by the Dutch and is now part of Indonesia. In the 19th cent. the Germans and British took increasing interest in eastern New Guinea. In 1906 British sovereignty was transferred to Australia and in 1914 Australian troops occupied the German settlement. It was handed to Australia as a
mandate in 1921. During the Second World War there was heavy fighting after the Japanese invaded. Its economy depends upon coffee, tea, bananas, and the mining of gold and copper.
