Nepal, a kingdom in the Himalayas, was formed in the 18th cent. out of the expansion of the Gurkha clans of the Kathmandu valley. It is extremely diverse—embracing mountains and valleys and Indo-Aryan- and Tibetan-Burman-speaking peoples. In 1814–16 the kingdom was defeated by Lord
Hastings and brought into tributary relations with British India. Its dynasty, a sacral Hindu kingship, has survived and has only recently accepted constitutional forms of monarchy. The country is among the poorest in the world and has long been dependent on the earnings of its famous Gurkha soldiers from service in British-Indian armies.
