Hilton, John (the Younger)

Hilton, John (the Younger), English organist and composer, son of John Hilton (the Elder); b.probably in Cambridge, 1599; d. Westminster (buried), March 21, 1657. He studied at Trinity Coll., Cambridge (Mus.B., 1626), then became organist and clerk of St. Margaret’s, Westminster (1628). He ed. a popular collection under the title Catch that Catch Can for 3 to 4 Voices (London, 1652; 3rd ed., 1667, as The Musical Companion), which contains 42 pieces by him. Other secular works include Ayres or Fa La’s for 3 Voices (London, 1627; ed. by J. Warren, Musical Antiquarian Soc, XIII, London, 1844), 14 fantasias a 3, several dance movements, and various songs and dialogues in MS collections (7 ed. in Musica Britannica, XXXIII, 1971). His sacred works, which include 4 Services, a Te Deum, 5 anthems, and 12 verse anthems, are open to much speculation; some may be by his father.
