Corner, Johann Gottlieb

Corner, Johann Gottlieb, German organist and composer, brother of Johann Valentin Corner; b. Penig, Saxony (baptized), April 16, 1697; d. Leipzig, Feb. 15, 1778. He settled in Leipzig and studied at the Thomasschule and the Univ. He was organist at the Univ. Church (from 1716), at St. Nicholas (from 1721), and at St. Thomas (from 1729). In 1723 Corner was also made music director of the Univ. Church, which appointment led to a dispute between Bach and the municipal authorities over musical responsibilities. All the same, relations between the two remained cordial. Corner retired from his duties in 1768. From 1723 to 1756 he also conducted the “second ordinary collegium musicum.” He composed principally music for church use.
