Ivogün, Maria [Kempner, Ilse] (b Budapest, 1891; d Beatenberg, Switz., 1987). Hung. soprano. Début Munich 1913 (Mimì in La bohème). Member of Munich Opera 1913–25. Created Ighino in Pfitzner's Palestrina, Munich 1917 (her husband, Karl Erb, created the title-role). CG début 1924 (Zerbinetta in Ariadne auf Naxos, a role in which Strauss described her as ‘without rival’), Berlin Municipal Opera 1925–34. Salzburg Fest. début 1925. Devoted herself to teaching after retirement.
