Adrio, Adam, distinguished German musicologist; b. Essen, April 4, 1901; d. Ritten, Bozen, Sept. 18, 1973. He studied with Abert, Schering, and Blume at the Univ. of Berlin (Ph.D., 1934, with the diss. Die Anfange des geistlichen Konzerts; publ. in Berlin, 1935), where he also taught (1932–45). After completing his Habilitation at the Free Univ. in Berlin (1949), he was a reader (1951–53) and a prof. (1953–67) of musicology there. Adrio was an authority on Protestant church music, contributing many articles to Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart and to music journals; also ed. the works of Johann Hermann Schein.
