American mathematician who received his Ph.D. at Cambridge University in 1990. He teaches at Trinity College at Cambridge. He received the Fields Medal—often referred to as the Nobel Prize for mathematics—in 1998 for his contribution to a branch of mathematics known as functional analysis, making extensive use of combinatorial theory.
