Opera North. Opera company based in Grand Th., Leeds, Yorkshire, formed in 1978 as northern arm of English National Opera at the London Coliseum. F.p. November 1978, Grand Th., Leeds, Saint- Saëns's Samson et Dalila. As financial independence grew, co. altered name from English National Opera North to Opera North in 1981. Gives regular seasons in Manchester, Nottingham, Sheffield, Hull, etc. Commissioned Wilfred Josephs's Rebecca (1983) and Benedict Mason's Playing Away (1994). Gave f. Eng. ps. of Jonny spielt auf (1984), Daphne (1987), Jérusalem (1990), and Der ferne Klang (1992), and f. Brit. stage p. of Verdi's first opera, Oberto (1994). First visit to London 1994 (Gloriana at CG). Mus. dir. David Lloyd-Jones from formation until 1990; Paul Daniel 1990–7.
