Martín y Soler, Vicente (b Valencia, 1754; d St Petersburg, 1806). Sp. composer. Went to Italy 1780, Vienna 1785, and St Petersburg 1788 as dir. of It. opera. Wrote 20 operas, several to libs. by da Ponte, incl. Una cosa rara (1786, from which Mozart quoted in the supper scene of Don Giovanni), Il burbero di buon core (1786), and L'arbore di Diana (1787), and two to libs. by Catherine II of Russia. In London 1794–6, returning to Russia as teacher.
