The widow of a policeman, outgoing Emma (Somers) is especially close to her teenaged son Charlie (Christ), who feels protective of his mother. And Emma needs protection since she has a long-standing drinking problem she refuses to admit to. Her ability to function becomes increasingly impaired just as Charlie needs her most—seems his girlfriend Lauren (Blair) is pregnant.
