Brazilian novelist, playwright and short-story writer. Name variations: Raquel de Queiros; Rachel de Queiroz; (pseudonym) Rita de Queluz. Born 1910 in Ceará, Brazil; died Nov 4, 2003, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Published works in magazines and newspapers and was the 1st woman elected to Brazilian Academy of Letters (1977); works, which are critically acclaimed and explore independent women, include O Quince (The Fifteenth, 1930), As três Marias (1963) and Dora Doralina (1974).
