Queler, Eve (née Rabin) , American conductor; b. N.Y., Jan. 1, 1936. She studied in N.Y. with Bamberger at the Mannes Coll. of Music, and took courses at the Hebrew Union School of Education and Sacred Music. After studying with Rosenstock on a Martha Baird Rockefeller Fund grant, she continued her training with Susskind and Siatkin in St. Louis and with Markevitch and Blomstedt in Europe. She made her conducting debut with Cavalleria rusticana in Fairlawn, N.J. (1966), then devoted herself mainly to conducting operas in concert with her own Opera Orch. of N.Y. (from 1967). She led performances of rarely heard operas on both sides of the Atlantic, and also gave the U.S. premieres of many works, ranging from Donizetti to Richard Strauss. She also appeared as a guest conductor with several North American orchs. Queler was the first American woman to conduct such esteemed ensembles as the Philadelphia Orch., the Cleveland Orch., and the Montreal Sym. Orch.
