Adair, Virginia Hamilton (1913–2004)

American poet. Born Mary Virginia Hamilton, Feb 28, 1913, in the Bronx, NY; raised in Montclair, New Jersey; died Sept 16, 2004, in Claremont, California; dau. of Robert Browning Hamilton; Mount Holyoke College, BS; Radcliffe, MA; m. Douglass Adair (prominent historian), 1936 (committed suicide 1968); children: Katharine Adair Waugh, Robert Adair, and Douglass Adair.

Was an English professor at California Polytechnic University in Pomona for 22 years; wrote poetry for 73 years before publishing 1st collection, Ants on the Melon, at age 83, which sold more than 28,000 copies.
