Gomorrah

Gomorrah

Gomorrah, Israel A city mentioned in the Bible (Genesis 10: 19) whose location is not known, although it may have been at the southern end of the Dead Sea. Together with Sodom, it was destroyed by ‘brimstone and fire’ (Genesis 19: 24) because of the wicked and immoral behaviour of its inhabitants. Located in a very fertile area, the name comes from the Hebrew ómer ‘sheaf of corn’, a reference to the crop grown here.
