Tadeus Reichstein

1897-1996

Polish-born chemist educated in Switzerland who received the 1950 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his research on adrenal cortex hormones. Reichstein and his team isolated and characterized about 29 hormones. Their work led to the isolation of the hormone cortisone, which was later discovered to be an anti-inflammatory agent. Reichstein is also known for his synthesis of vitamin C.
