Beattie, John (ca. 1873)
A retired British photographer of Clifton, Bristol, England, with 20 years' experience, who decided to test the claims of Frederick A. Hudson in regard to spirit photography. In the early stage of the experiments, in which he was assisted by Dr. G. S. Thompson, he registered failure after failure. Sometimes 20 plates were exposed without result, but in 1873 he obtained important results. The medium, a tradesman, described minutely and correctly in advance the appearances that were to be impressed on the plates. He claimed to see them clairvoyantly. The developed pictures tallied with his descriptions. The experiments were reported by Rev. Stainton Moses and others in Human Nature (vol. 8, 1874).
